Virginia Tech Massacre
Since everybody else is commenting about this incident I thought I'd join the party. Actually my comments are more related to people's reactions to the incident rather than the incident itself. I will break this up into sections.
(1) Gun Control
Here we go again. As soon as a violent incident occurs the anti-gun lobby calls for the banning of all guns everywhere. While your at it , you're going to need to ban propane, gasoline and fertilizer since they can be used to make extremely powerful bombs.
As it turns out , many states have a policy that forbids people that have been held on a Psychiatric evaluation against their will from purchasing firearms. Virginia was a little more lax. That will probably be fixed. It's about being reasonable here. The knee jerk 'Ban all guns' cry is as absurd as it is predictable. Preventing people who have demonstrated that they are unstable and potentially dangeous from buying firearms is reasonable.
(2) Video Games, Violent Movies and other psycho-babble nonsense.
This one is also completely absurd. People just can't deal with the idea that some people are mentally defective. They have to find a 'cause'. Something that made the shooter do it. What if there is no cause? People can point to some minor frustrations ,that everyone endures in daily life , that set the shooter off. But does this explain anything? The fear people have is that if we can't explain it then we can't stop it. I'm afraid that's the way it is. We can't stop it. We can't control the actions of all people all the time. Some people want to kill. Some of those actually will kill. All we can do is pick up the pieces after it happens. No cures here. Sorry it's the sad truth.
(3) America has a violent Culture.
Another load of crap. Great, hundreds of millions of people are summarily judged by the actions of a single lunatic. Never mind that 99.9999999% of the people are nonviolent . Lets just focus on the few assholes and kooks that are violent.
There is nothing to be gleaned from this incident. It is a random misfortune with no real cause or reason behind it. It is meaningless.
